The Research
The most cited study questioning topical arnica efficacy in post-procedure recovery is van Exsel et al. 2016, published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

The study tested arnica in a petroleum-based ointment. Petroleum is an occlusive — it creates a surface barrier and does not absorb. The arnica in that formula stayed on the surface. The study did not find that arnica fails. It found that arnica in a petroleum base fails.

THE AFTER uses emu oil as its primary carrier. Emu oil has been studied in peer-reviewed pharmaceutical research as a biocompatible carrier with documented skin affinity. Researchers at the University of Karachi formulated an insulin emulgel using emu oil specifically as the delivery vehicle — chosen because of its absorption properties for a molecule that requires genuine skin affinity to be bioavailable. Additional research published in ChemistrySelect and Springer Nature has examined its permeation characteristics, finding properties superior to mineral oil when applied topically.

About the Founder
Janice spent years working alongside physicians and physical therapists in post-surgical rehabilitation — where arnica was a clinical standard, not a wellness trend.
When she began researching her own blepharoplasty recovery she found nothing built specifically for the periorbital area. Every formula she found carried arnica in a petroleum base. So she formulated one that didn't.
Before THE AFTER was available to anyone else she used it on her own blepharoplasty recovery. It did not feel right to recommend it to a patient's skin before she had trusted it on her own.
